How to Make Electronic Tax Payments

Federal Income Tax - Online Payments

Balances due of Federal Income Tax can be paid online in a few different ways:

  • Pay Now with Direct Pay (Bank ACH)
  • Pay Now by Card or Digital Wallet
  • Sign In to Pay

You can make a payment today or schedule it for later without signing up for an IRS Online Account using the Pay Now with Direct Pay feature. You will need to confirm your identity before making a payment using this option but it is fairly simple.

Pay Now with Direct Pay (Bank ACH)

  1. Go to https://irs.gov/payments

  2. Select Pay Now with Direct Pay

  3. Select Make a Payment

  4. Under the Reason for Payment dropdown, select Balance Due

  5. Under the Apply Payment to dropdown, select Income Tax - Form 1040

  6. Under the Tax Period for Payment, select Year of Return filed

  7. Select Continue

  8. For the Please Confirm popup, select Continue

  9. Next, you will be prompted to provide information to verify your identity.The information provided must match the information reported on your return for the verification year selected. The verification information requested includes: a. Tax Year for Identification b. Filing Status c. First Name d. Last Name e. SSN or ITIN f. Date of Birth g. Country of Residence h. Address

  10. Select the checkbox next to the statement “I accept the Privacy Act and Paperwork Reduction Act.”

  11. On the next screen, enter the amount of your balance due from your filed tax return & confirm the amount in the next box.

  12. Select your Payment date. As a reminder, balances due are due by April 15th to avoid penalties and interest.

  13. Enter your bank routing number

  14. Enter your bank account number

  15. Confirm your account number

  16. Select your Account type: either Checking or Savings.

  17. Select the checkbox next to the statement “I would like to receive email confirmation notifications and agree to the Email Terms of Service.”

  18. Enter your email address

  19. Confirm your email address

  20. Select Continue

  21. For the Disclosure Authorization popup, select Continue. You will then have an opportunity to review your payment details before submitting your payment.

  22. Review your payment details and when confirmed, you must enter the following information as an Electronic Signature: a. First Name b. Last Name c. SSN or ITIN

  23. Select the checkbox next to the statement “I accept the Debit Authorization Agreement.”

  24. Select Submit

  25. Print and save your Confirmation receipt for your records.


The IRS uses third party payment processing services for payments by debit or credit card. You information is only used to process your payment.

As with most card processing services, there is a fee for debit card transactions or a percentage charged for credit card transactions. These rates vary depending on the service you choose to use.

Pay Now by Card or Digital Wallet

  1. Go to https://irs.gov/payments
  2. Select Pay Now by Card or Digital Wallet
  3. Rates for debit or credit cards are listed underneath each of the three processors: payUSAtax, Pay1040, or ACI Payments, Inc. Select Make a Payment under the processor of your choice. (Note: this example shows the process for processor payUSAtax.)
  4. You will be directed to the processor’s website, select Make a Personal Payment (or Business Payment if needed).
  5. Under the Payment Category, select Form 1040 Current Tax Return. a. If it applies, select the checkbox next to the statement “Check box if you received a balance due notice from the Internal Revenue Service.”
  6. Select Continue
  7. On the next page you will be asked to provide the following information: a. Taxpayer Information: First and Last Name, SSN or ITIN, and DOB. b. Address c. Taxpayer Contact Information: Phone number and email address d. Payment Amount e. Payment Method: either Debit or Credit f. You can also select to checkout with PayPal or PayPal Credit
  8. Enter your card information, including: a. Cardholder name b. Card number c. Expiration month and year d. CVV code e. Billing zip code
  9. Select Continue
  10. Review your payment information. Note: Email confirmations can only be sent when an email address is provided. The total payment amount including convenience fees is provided in green.
  11. If desired, uncheck the box next to the statement “Check box if you wish to receive promotional emails and other updates.”
  12. Select the reCAPTCHA box stating “I’m not a robot.”
  13. If desired, select the check box next to the statement “Check box if you would like to create an account for future payment or email reminders.”
  14. Select the button that reads Accept Terms and Process Your Federal Tax Payment
  15. Print or save confirmation for your records

You may also make payments by creating or logging in to your IRS Online Account where you can: view the amount you owe, your payment plan details, payment history, and any scheduled or pending payments.

Sign In to Pay

  1. Go to https://irs.gov/payments
  2. Scroll down to the section for signing in and select Go to Your Account
  3. Select Sign in to your Online Account
  4. Either select Sign in or Create an account with ID.me
  5. For returning account holders, you can enter your email and password to login.
  6. You can choose whether to receive a code by text or call to the number on your account.
  7. Enter your code and select Continue
  8. You will be shown your balance due, if any. You can View Balance Details.
  9. Select Make a Payment
  10. Select Payment Method, either Bank Account or Card (on external website)
  11. Select the type of payment you want to make from the following options: a. Pay Towards a Balance b. Amended Return c. Estimated Tax d. Proposed Tax Assessment
  12. Any of these options will produce additional dropdowns and fields to fill out. If you select Pay Towards a Balance, you will need to answer the following: a. Tax Year for Payment b. Payment Amount
  13. Select your Payment Date
  14. Select Next
  15. On the next page, you can select from a Saved Bank Account (if any) or Manually Enter Account Information
  16. Select Account Type: Checking or Savings
  17. Enter and confirm Routing Number
  18. Enter and confirm Account Number
  19. Select whether you want to receive an email confirmation or not
  20. Select Next
  21. Review your payment details
  22. Select the check box next to the statement “I would like to receive a payment confirmation email and agree to the Email Terms of Service.”
  23. Select the checkbox next to the statement “I have read the Disclosure Authorization and Debit Authorization Agreements to authorize this payment.”
  24. Select Submit
  25. Print or save your confirmation receipt for your records.

Georgia State Income Tax - Online Payments

Georgia State Income Tax payments can be made online via the Georgia Tax Center at https://gtc.dor.ga.gov. If you already have a GTC account, you can login and make a payment. If you do not have an online account, you can either Make a Quick Payment or Sign Up for Online Access.

Make a Quick Payment

  1. Select Make a Quick Payment under the third section labeled Tasks and select Next
  2. Select either Business or Individual for Customer Type
  3. If you select Individual, you will be asked to provide you ID Type: either SSN or ITIN
  4. Enter your payor information, including: Name, Email, and Phone Number
  5. Select Filing Frequency from either: Individual Income Annual or Individual Income Fiscal
  6. Select Filing Period for payment; you will select a 12/31 date for whichever year you are filing.
  7. Next you will enter your payment information, including: a. Routing Number b. Account Number c. Bank Account Type
  8. Select a payment date, amount, and confirm the amount of the payment
  9. Review your payor and payment information, then select Submit
  10. You can print or save a copy of your confirmation for your records

Sign Up for Online Access

You are eligible to signed up for an online GTC account if:

  • You have previously filed a return in the state of Georgia; and,
  • You have never created an online Georgia Tax Center (GTC) logon.

For Individual Income Tax Accounts, you will need:

  • SSN/ITIN
  • Federal Adjusted Gross Income (Federal AGI) from your most recent return filed in the state of Georgia
  • Email address
  1. Select Sign up for Online Access from the second block labeled Registration and select Next
  2. Select your Account Type as Individual Income Tax and select Next a. Note: to set up a Business account, you would select Corporate Income Tax here
  3. Select either ITIN or SSN and select Next
  4. Enter your SSN or ITIN, confirm it, and enter your most recent Federal AGI and select Next a. Note: a pop up will appear if any of the information entered is incorrect
  5. Enter your personal information including name, email address and select Next
  6. You will either be asked to select your login information or it will send you an email to verify your account
  7. You can print or save a copy of your confirmation for your records
